On Reunion island, a French overseas region, Creole gardens are reservoirs of biodiversity and mirrors of the local identity, threatened to disappear as the island urbanises. A handful of enthusiasts are protecting this model of self-sufficiency, an ,,organised mess’’ traditionally planted around the house in several layers, harmoniously combining flowers, tropical fruits, vegetables and medicinal plants, both native and introduced.
